Our Garden Programme at Goethe International Charter School reflects the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate by fostering inquiry, global awareness, and meaningful, real-world learning. Through hands-on experiences in gardening and nutrition, students develop a deeper understanding of what it means to grow, nourish, and care for both themselves and their environment.
Students actively plant, cultivate, and harvest organic produce while engaging in transdisciplinary learning that is authentically connected to their classroom Units of Inquiry. The garden serves as a living laboratory where learners build conceptual understanding in science, health, sustainability, and social responsibility. Through this process, students strengthen their research, collaboration, and critical-thinking skills while exploring issues of local and global significance such as food systems, environmental stewardship, and well-being.
The programme is led by dedicated parent volunteers who collaborate closely with teachers to ensure alignment with grade-level curriculum goals and IB standards. Each year, the garden highlights special themes—such as sustainability, biodiversity, or nutrition—while consistently reinforcing essential gardening knowledge and skills.
Time spent in the garden is meaningful “green time” that supports the development of the whole child. Research shows that gardening promotes calmness, focus, and overall well-being. At GICS, we clearly observe the positive impact of learning in a natural environment: students become more balanced, reflective, and connected—to their community, to the planet, and to themselves.
