School Meals

Students spend their recess and snack times in the blue table areas assigned to elementary or middle school, and they have lunch outside the cafeteria. Please see the bell schedules for meal planning. Classrooms provide drinking water for refill throughout the day. Students should bring their own unbreakable water bottle, and snacks. Students may also bring their own lunch, or get lunch from the cafeteria.

Cafeteria Lunch

Goethe International Charter School does not have food preparation facilities or staff. These services are provided by LAUSD and charged to our school. The expense used to be shared between GICS and families using the services. Since 2020, families have NOT been CHARGED for meal services.

Free & Reduced Price Meals (FRPM)

Under California's Universal Meals Program, all public school students, regardless of their parents' income, are now eligible for free breakfast and lunch. However, students who do qualify for FRPM based on household income may also qualify for reduced costs for other programs such as After School Care and Winter, Spring or Summer Break holiday camps.

Students who receive assistance through various state or local agencies (e.g. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or CalFresh), Free or Reduced MediCal, TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or CalWORKS)) are directly certified to be eligible for FRPM.

GICS' percentage of FRPM eligible students also determines our school's federal and state funding for:

  • additional classroom teachers to support smaller class sizes
  • academic facilitators & instructional coaches
  • instructional supplies and materials
  • additional technology devices for school and home use
  • professional development for teachers
  • educational software programs
