At Goethe International Charter School, we believe the arts are an essential part of a well-rounded education. Through Visual Arts and Performing Arts, students develop creativity, confidence, communication skills, and cultural awareness while exploring their unique perspectives and ideas.
Aligned with both the California Arts Standards and the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Arts framework, students engage in creating, presenting, responding, and connecting through meaningful artistic experiences. Through inquiry, reflection, and hands-on learning, students learn to express themselves, appreciate diverse perspectives, and make meaningful connections between the arts and the world around them.
Featured Program: Art
Visual Arts
In Visual Arts, students explore a wide range of artistic media and techniques while developing their creativity and artistic voice. Learning experiences span traditional disciplines such as:
- Drawing and Painting
- Sculpture and Ceramics
- Architecture and Design
- Mixed Media
Students also engage with contemporary artistic practices, including:
- Digital Art and Design
- Time-Based Art
- Installation Art
- Performance-Based Art
Through the study and creation of artwork from different cultures and historical periods, students gain an understanding of how visual art has shaped societies throughout history while contributing to their own personal and cultural development.
Performing Arts
All middle school students participate in Performing Arts through a progressive dance curriculum designed to build skills, confidence, and creativity in age-appropriate ways.
Building a Growth Mindset
Students learn that artistic success comes through perseverance, practice, and resilience. By embracing challenges and reflecting on their progress, they discover that anyone can develop the skills to create meaningful and impactful artwork.
Connecting Art to the World
Beyond creating art, students learn to observe, analyze, and discuss artwork with confidence. They explore art from different cultures, historical periods, and perspectives, uncovering connections between art, culture, history, and identity. Through these experiences, students develop a deeper understanding of both the visual arts and the world around them.
The IB Learner Profile in the Arts
Throughout both Visual and Performing Arts, students are encouraged to embody the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. Through artistic inquiry, reflection, collaboration, and performance, students learn to be:
- Inquirers who explore new ideas and perspectives
- Risk-Takers who embrace creative challenges
- Reflective learners who evaluate and improve their work
- Communicators who express ideas through artistic media
- Principled individuals who respect diverse viewpoints and artistic traditions
The Arts program empowers students to become creative thinkers, confident performers, and culturally aware global citizens.
