The Goethe International Charter School (GICS) gardening program provides a unique opportunity to students of all grade levels to learn about healthy ways of growing up. It includes gardening as well as nutrition lessons. Students plant, grow and harvest their organic produce while focusing on education goals that are linked to the ongoing curriculum in the classroom.
The gardening program is run by parent volunteers who prepare their lessons in collaboration with the teachers to make sure they align with the grade level syllabus. Every school year the gardening program focuses on different special topics while ensuring that all essential gardening standards are covered.
When students and teachers spend time in the garden, it is valuable “green time” for all. Numerous studies have cited that gardening promotes calmer, happier and more focused individuals. At GICS we can clearly observe the very positive influence of spending time in a natural environment.
