Multilingual Education

At Goethe International Charter School, language learning is more than a subject—it is a pathway to understanding the world. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, we believe that learning multiple languages helps students become open-minded, confident communicators, and globally minded citizens.

From Transitional Kindergarten through Middle School, students are immersed in a rich multilingual environment that encourages curiosity, cultural appreciation, and meaningful connections across communities. Through German and Spanish language instruction, students develop the skills needed to communicate across cultures while building the academic and personal strengths that prepare them for success in an interconnected world.

Elementary School Language Programs

German Immersion (Grades TK–5)

Our German Language Immersion (GLI) program is a defining feature of the Goethe International experience. Through a dual-language approach integrated with the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), students develop proficiency in both English and German while engaging in meaningful, inquiry-based learning.

Grades TK–2
Students participate in a 50/50 immersion model, spending half of their instructional day learning in English and half in German.

Grades 3–5
Students who demonstrate the language proficiency needed to access grade-level content in German continue in a 70% English and 30% German instructional model.

Through German Immersion, students build bilingualism, biliteracy, academic achievement, and intercultural understanding while gaining the confidence to communicate in more than one language.

German Language Acquisition (Grades 3–5)

The German Language Acquisition (GLA) program supports students who join Goethe International in later grades with little or no prior German instruction, as well as students who benefit from additional language support.

As an alternative pathway to the German Immersion program, GLA provides increased access to core instruction in English while helping students build a strong foundation in German. Lessons focus on speaking, listening, essential vocabulary, and key grammatical structures.

This program ensures that all students can successfully access the curriculum while progressing toward bilingualism, biliteracy, strong academic achievement, and global citizenship.

Spanish Language (Grades 3–5)

Beginning in third grade, students are introduced to Spanish as an additional world language. Spanish instruction broadens students' multilingual abilities and deepens their understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives.

Students learn foundational language skills while exploring the history, traditions, arts, and cultural contributions of Spanish-speaking countries. Through language and culture, students gain a greater appreciation for the richness and diversity of our global community.

Middle School Language Programs
